John Rogers, FCC’s Youth Director

John RogersBorn and raised in Montclair, New Jersey, John Rogers is passionate about social justice, community, and spiritual development. John graduated from Montclair High School in 2007 where he played baseball, participated in student government, and performed in the School of Visual and Performing Arts. At Davidson College, John was a History Major with a concentration in Ethnic Relations. Volunteering for Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Belize after graduation, however, changed his plans to become a documentary filmmaker. In Belize, John led Spirituality Retreats for teachers in the district’s thirty schools and worked to bring greater exposure to indigenous music by forming choirs, organizing community music gatherings, and producing a Q’eqchi’ Maya music CD. Union Theological Seminary in NYC was the next step after this transformative experience. At Union, John is currently in the Masters of Divinity program as he discerns between a call in Parish ministry and working towards a PhD. This fall, John will be presenting at the American Academy of Religion in San Diego on the Sermon On the Mount as a text of resistance for the Q’eqchi’ Maya in a neocolonial environment. John’s greatest joy since returning from Belize has been the opportunity to work with the sages, future leaders, and overall great people in the FCC High School Youth Group. He feels honored to be a part of an innovative, kind, and radically inclusive community like First Congregational Church.
